LHSCC 2010 END OF SUMMER UPDATE… from Coach Barbe

THE POWER OF “ER  No, not the emergency room; the suffix “er”.  As in strongER, bettER, fastER, summER!  It connotes a process of improvement.  As summer training comes to an end, everyone should be able to report being better, stronger and faster.  Not as strong and fast as you want or will be, but that’s the process.  So, when Coach Barbe asks how summer training was, be sure to use “er”.

(BTW “it was OKer is not a good answer!).

OFFICAL PRACTICE BEGINS ON MONDAY, AUGUST 2nd at 8am

We will meet in the LHS lower parking lot.

REQUIRED PAPERWORK to participate includes:

1)      RUNNERS’ INFO FORM

2)      ATHLETIC PHYSICAL

(2 copies please)

Runners will have until Friday, August 13 to have all paperwork turned in or they will not participate.

Copies of forms will be available on Monday or online at www.lakesidexc.org.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT for runners includes:

1)      a big water bottle (with water!)

2)      a runners’ watch (with a stop watch function) (19.95 at Target!)

3)      a zip-loc plastic bag (to be reused for ice)

4)      a lightweight runners hat (and/or sunscreen)

PLEASE NOTE: FRIDAY 8/13 IS THE LAST DAY TO JOIN LHSCC

IF YOU ARE BUYING NEW SHOES as part of your preparation for the season, go to Big Peach, Phidippides or Fleet Feet.  Only at a professional running store can you be sure to get the right shoe.  Tell them who you are and what you are about to do.  The clearance rack at Sports Authority is not good.

GOOD LUCK at NATIONALS!  Meghan Wetterhall (and her sister, Maddy) qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships in three different events!! (Steeplechase, 1500m and 3000m).

Also, rising 9th grader Jedrek Higgins will be in Cali for the Nationals, running in both the 800 and 1500.  (Check the milesplit websites for results).

HEADED TO THE MOUNTAINS!  20 of LHSCC’s top runners will be leaving for summer camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.  Along with the Dance Contest, Talent Show, Movie Night and the Camp Dance, the team will log approx. 40 miles (half of them all uphill!).

Just because the captains are at camp, remaining runners are encouraged to keep coming to LHS for 8am morning practices.  Take advantage of these last weeks of summer to get…ER!

LHSCC ALUMNI NEWS…

Mosi Smith (CO 2000) will be competing in the Canadian Ultra Ironman Championships this week.  Over three days he will swim 6.2 miles, bike 260 miles and run a double marathon!

Joe Thorne was inducted into the ATC Hall for Fame recently, joining Eddie Roberts, Mark Thompson and Bill Chadwick as Lakeside’s representatives in the HOF.

Max Randolph is working at Phidippides (Ansley Mall) this summer.  Stop by and tell him you are with LHSCC.

Marcos Campbell ran around Stone Mountain 10 times (50miles) as part of his effort to raise funds to study at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Wyoming. (Contact Coach Barbe if you would like to contribute).

COACH’S TIP:  FLIP THE FLOP!!  A recent study by the University of Arkansas reported that wearing flip flops was worse for your feet than wearing stiletto heels!  They lack protection and support and contribute to many “running” injuries.  In particular, because there is no heel support, flip flop wearers have to grip with their toes which stresses the shin muscles and can inflame shin splints.  It may not be “cool” or fashionable, but if you want to prevent running injuries you should be just as serious about what you wear on your feet at school as you do when you hit the trail.

(Besides, flip flops are against Lakeside’s Dress Code!)
