LHSCC 2014 WEEKLY UPDATE # 9… from Coach Barbe

IT'S CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON!  It might seem like it was just a couple of weeks ago that Coach Barbe talked about picking up the pace;  well, its time to shift gears again as we enter the last month and most important races of the season.  Everyone is right where they need to be for us to be ready when its time for us to step up to the line and be ready to be a champion.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP RACES begin this week with

THE Dekalb County JV CHAMPIONSHIPS on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at DHMS

The races will begin around 5 with races for Boys and Girls

The WENDY’S INVITATIONAL is a tradition for the top runners of LHSCC.  We will travel this weekend to Charlotte NC for an overnight stay and a race ON SATURDAY Oct 4 against some of the toughest teams in the SE on one of the fastest courses in the area.

THE DEKALB COUNTY VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS are on TUESDAY OCT 7 at DHMS

THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTERS, including the Wendy’s runners will be announced at the beginning of the week.

WE ARE CHAMPIONS ALREADY! The entire team took the week’s mantra “beat somebody!” to heart on Saturday at the Aubrae Gunderson Invtiational in Conyers, hosted by Heritage High School and Coach Scott Wade.  In fact, Davis Stockwell (Varsity White) and Emiliano Arellano (JV) beat everybody to win their respective races.  They led their teams to the podium as well.  They were joined medalists in every other race and there were personal records and fantastic finishes all day long!

THE VARSITY BOYS finished second overall, led by Davis’ impressive effort.  He was in position to win the whole way and when it mattered most, he was strong enough to finish the competition (literally, the “runner-up” from Clarkston fell off Davis’ pace with 50 yards to go)  Davis was joined by fellow medalists Connor Keisling ( 12th) and Andrew Kent (16th). The team had another 3 runners to break 18 minutes.

THE JV BOYS had the most impressive effort of an outstanding day.  Emiliano led from start to finish, and despite a 15 second lead, he still let his head fall back as he finished with a kick.  Although there was not an official team award, the team finished first with an impressive low score of 28 points based on the 4 other runners they had in the top 15!  Michael Leon finished 4th, followed closely by Marque Owens (5th), Caleb Cloud (7th) and Oliver Hewett (15th).  Oliver, btw, was playing the part of Qurabel Asefa on Saturday.  He gave an medal winning performance!

THE VARSITY GIRLS surprised everyone Saturday.  First, by running in the fastest White Varsity race and then by finishing an impressive third overall.  Corrie Smith led the team this week with a strong 4th place finish.  She was pushed to the finish by teammate Morgan Mihalis (6th) and the team award was assured by the strong effort by Eliana Blam (2oth).  It was also nice to see junior captain Sarah Breeden return to competition on Saturday and be able to contribute to the team’s success.

THE JV GIRLS also rose to the occasion, in the last race of the day, with 3 runners in the top 20.  Haley Hays led the team with a career best effort to finish 11th, and was joined in the award ceremony by Jennifer Guzdial, coming back from injury to finish 13th followed closely by  Feven Alemayehu in 14th.

FANTASTIC FINISHES were had by all. Check the results on the website to see just how fast everyone ran.

CONGRATULATIONS CLARKSTON. The Clarkston Boys were the Varsity Boys winners.  They were the only team better than LHSCC on this Saturday and they celebrated their victory with grace and honor.  LHSCC had donated the funds for Clarkston’s entry in the race and they offered heartfelt thanks and  plaque recognizing our partnership to improve DeKalb County Cross Country.
